Chapter 17

Alex leaned against the door for over an hour, listening as Hannah moved around the house and finally shut herself in her room.

She was overwhelmed, scared — he shouldn’t fool himself into thinking it was anything else. Stupid.

Hannah hadn’t moved for a while now. She wasn’t likely to come bursting in here anymore. She hadn’t even tried the door earlier.

He paced back and forth, his mind soothed by movement. Need to keep moving. Needed to move until he couldn’t think anymore.

Alex changed into running clothes and opened the window. A large camellia bush obscured the window from the neighbors. It was only four feet to the ground. Now that he thought about it, the house was pretty appealing to a thief.

He noiselessly dropped down and closed the window behind him. He didn’t want Hannah to know how he’d gone if she came to check on him.

And why would she? he reminded himself.

A twig snapped under his foot. He froze.

Alex ran both hands through his hair. You are sneaking out of your own house, not breaking into someone else’s. Get a grip.

He walked through the yard with purpose, like he’d just taken out the garbage. At the front walk, he made a show of stretching his arms and legs. He didn’t see any of the neighbors, but you never knew.

At the top of the three stairs to the sidewalk, he turned back towards the house, eyes automatically swinging to Hannah’s window. Her light was on. He knew she was flopped on the bed and restless — no, crying. Alex looked away and shook his head at the thought. She was just listening to music or something.

Alex ran. He didn’t look back. Faster than he ran with Hannah. His world became the next step, the next breath. He pushed hard, but not beyond his muscles’ natural abilities. Pushing beyond had limits. He wanted to run, not sprint and collapse.

He fell into a rhythm. He tried to maintain focus on his body, but he didn’t have to. He had more experience with his body than most people ever got. He’d been living in it for a very long time.

What the hell was he thinking earlier? Hannah needed a safe place to learn to be a vampire. Eventually she wouldn’t need him anymore. He shouldn’t get used to her.
